Anaesthesiology

Anaesthesiology is the integral part of total perioperative care, including pain relief, unconsciousness and muscle relaxation before, during, and after surgery. It aims to manage patient safety, critical care, emergency medicine, and pain management, using general, regional, or monitored sedation.
Types of Anesthesia:
General Anesthesia: Controlled, reversible unconsciousness wherein the patient is put to sleep and may require breathing support.
Regional Anesthesia: Numbing of a large area of the body like spinal or epidural, by blocking specific nerves.
Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC)/Sedation: This varies from light to deep sedation, often used for procedures like colonoscopies.
Local Anesthesia: Numbs a small, specific area.
Perioperative Care: Anesthesiologists are responsible for assessing the patient before the procedure, maintaining vital functions, and managing the subsequent post-operative recovery.

Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure for the restoration of the function of a joint wherein the treatment is beyond treatments like medication or physical therapy. It involves the replacing, remodelling, or realigning the articular surface of a joint, by implanting an artificial component called prosthesis, which is made of materials like metal, plastic, or ceramic.
